Dave and Samantha “Sam” met over ten years ago before they became an item. The two were at a guitar hero party (which yes, was a thing back in the day) with their other significant others at the time. Once Sam walked in she noticed Dave right away. Who can resist a guy that can play Barracuda on the expert level? However, nothing came from that get-together. The two didn’t end up meeting again until two years later when we were both at a Buffalo Bills home opener. Dave asked Sam if she had remembered who he was, which of course she did. They chatted for a while but went their separate ways. Fast forward another year when Dave ran into Sam’s sister at a party and then decided that maybe third times a charm so he asked for Sam’s phone number. The rest, as they say, was history!

Sam tells the engagement story like this, “We’ve been engaged since August 5, 2016. Dave special ordered my ring, and according to him, was so excited the day it came in that he considered driving to my work that afternoon to propose. I am a critical care nurse, so after giving it more thought, he decided against it (luckily, for my patients’ sake). Who could think critically after something like that? He opted for a romantic dinner, followed by a proposal in front of the “I love you so much” mural that evening instead. He was so excited to discover that I actually got out of work early that day, that he thought his plan was falling into place. I, however, had my own plans in mind and decided on a long, leisurely nap instead. Dave urged me to go to dinner, even promising to take me to my favorite place, Clark’s, for oysters but I wanted to stay home and pack for our trip to NYC that next morning. Our outbound flight was scheduled for 5AM. Plans foiled, Dave moved on to planning a proposal in NYC. We were there to visit my oldest friend, and had a full weekend’s worth of activities planned. When Dave suggested we head to The Met after lunch with our friends, I was thrilled. It is one of my favorite places. We walked around for a few hours, me enjoying the sites and Dave planning an impromptu proposal, then stopped at the museum coffee shop feeling the lag of our early flight. Dave had a shot of espresso, and I a coffee, before heading up to the rooftop of The Met. He was planning to propose again up there, but it was filled with guests for a cocktail party and we could barely move. We headed to the French Renaissance exhibit, my personal favorite, and amidst admiring all the beauty I gave Dave a hug and felt his heart beating practically out of his chest. He was sweaty, and shaky, and pacing about, that I (a cardiac nurse) began to worry and begged him to go outside to sit down and get some fresh air. He brushed it off as the effects of the espresso and urged me through the exhibit. When we entered one room which I said looked straight out of a Jane Austen novel, he dropped to one knee and proposed. It was one of the most romantic moments of my life. Dave had told my other best friend what he was planning, so she too flew in to surprise me. I spent the entire weekend celebrating with my fiancé and my closest friends. Best weekend of my entire life.”

With about eight months to plan, Sam and Dave got to wedding planning work. They chose wedding colors of blush and navy with pops of pink and gold tones to complement an intimate and romantic feel with a vintage flair.

120 New Yorkers traveled to Texas the weekend of April 7th, 2017 and gathered at the Grove waiting for Sam to walk down the aisle. The ceremony ended with “I Do’s” followed by cocktail hour on the Trellis which provided perfect shade for the sunny day. Guests transitioned into the Great Hall for the dinner and dancing that lasted until 11 pm. With this being a destination wedding the couple hoped that everyone enjoyed themselves after making such a long trip.

For a honeymoon, the two traveled to Thailand the following summer after Dave wrapped up his Spring semester at law school.

Same had this advice to offer planning couples, “Just to remember that if there is any day that can be about your fiance and you, this is it. A lot of people will have opinions about your wedding day, and it’s just important to walk away at the end of the day feeling like it was what you wanted, and that it ultimately feels like you as a couple.”
